Optimism’s Name Is Starting To Look Less Ironic 😆

According to $OP ( ▲ 2.0% ) ’s budget update, Optimism spent a third less money last year and appears to be better for it. 🥉

The Foundation's Year 4 report has new commitments at roughly 150M OP against 229.92M the prior year. Retro Funding: paused. Airdrops: zero, down from 10.4M OP. Governance Fund emissions: off 53%.

Whole categories of token distribution simply stopped.

What's left is OP Enterprise, launched in January. It sells managed chain infrastructure to institutions - Bitpanda's Vision Chain, Ink upgrading to Fully Managed, an MOU with Dunamu for GIWA. Every OP committed now has to point at either landing one of those customers or growing OP Mainnet, which posted 60%+ monthly transaction growth on the year.

Governance also approved a buyback routing up to half of Superchain revenue into monthly OP purchases. 9M OP retired so far.

But a DAO delegate named MconnectDAO asked if, before another 200M OP goes out in Year 5, could we see a dashboard showing what the last batch bought? Customers acquired, users retained, revenue generated. No answer yet.

Still - fewer tokens, an actual product, revenue funding buybacks. The name is starting to look less ironic. 🕵️

Bybit VS The Hermit Kingdom 😱

Bybit is suing North Korea. Not metaphorically - a real civil complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia naming the DPRK, its Reconnaissance General Bureau, and the Lazarus Group over the February 2025 hack that walked off with $1.5 billion. 🧑‍⚖️

Bybit secured a preliminary injunction against the John Doe wallets still holding and moving the money, and the court's finding that Bybit has "demonstrated a likelihood of success on the merits." That's a federal judge putting a legal fence around addresses on a public ledger, which is a newer trick than it sounds.

Tally so far: about $48.4 million recovered, another $30.5 million frozen across more than 28 exchanges and custodians. Call it five percent of the take. German authorities dismantled the exchange eXch along the way, and German and Swiss police disrupted the exchange Lazarus used to rinse the proceeds, Cryptomixer .

It’s not much, but it’s a start. 👍️

Crypto's Physical Security Problem Gets Another Data Point We Didn’t Need 😶

Harry Yeh is dead at the foot of a Paraguayan high-rise, and nobody can yet say how he got there.

La Tribuna reported the body outside Jade Park, a luxury tower in Asunción's Trinidad district, preliminarily identified as Harry Chun Tak Yeh, founder and managing partner of Quantum Fintech Group. Police were called around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 7. The body was roughly 100 metres below, naked and covered with a black plastic bag.

Prosecutor María del Carmen Palazón went up to the 30th floor with criminalistics and homicide officers. Doors open, interior heavily disturbed, nobody inside. A second unit on the 27th floor was also processed for evidence. A Brazilian woman staying there, reported as Yeh's partner, told investigators she didn't know what had happened.

Accident, suicide, and third-party involvement all remain open pending autopsy.

Yeh entered Bitcoin in 2013 and ran Quantum Fintech Group. He also founded and seeded the LIF3 and L3 projects, but his most visible footprint was $FTM ( ▲ 0.4% ) .

This Is An… Uncomfortably Frequent Thing

I know this happened in Paraguay, but across the ocean in France, this kind of stuff is happening at an alarming rate. Chainalysis counted 30 publicly known violent crypto incidents in France through mid-2026, up from 19 in all of 2025, with more than $30 million taken globally in the first half - on pace to break 2025's $58 million record.

French organized-crime prosecutors have responded with about 200 arrests and 88 indictments. French authorities using a broader classification put their own H1 tally at 77 cases against roughly 45 for all of 2025. The driver, per Chainalysis: a French tax official allegedly sold dossiers on high-net-worth holders - names, addresses, holdings, phone numbers.

A Uniswap pool can lag the outside market until someone trades, leaving LPs to pay the tab when arbitrageurs correct it. Maestro uses a Reactive Network contract to watch Pyth’s ETH/USD feed on Ethereum Sepolia and carry updates to a manager on Unichain, where liquidity is recentered and fees can be adjusted. The manager role is auctioned for per-block rent paid to LPs, turning the party steering the pool into a paying tenant. Reactive Network.

Now for something I have nothing about but some of you do: Sia’s client-first architecture pushed erasure coding into browsers, where the existing compatible Rust option was too slow and nobody can sneak in a bigger server behind the tab. Its new MIT-licensed library uses SIMD across x86, ARM, and WebAssembly while remaining compatible with eleven years of stored data. Browser encoding reached 1.6 GiB/s, roughly eight times the alternative, which should keep uploads from turning into a coffee break. Sia.
