OVERVIEW
THE PEOPLE v. UPTOBER 🔨
Today’s newsletter is a look at how crypto has historically performed in the month of October. But it’s a court record. Enjoy. 👇
Case No. 10-2026. Hearing on the Defendant's Motion to Be Taken Seriously.
Presiding: The Hon. Total Market Cap, Monthly Timeframe
For the People: The Data
For the Defendant: Mr. Degen Crane, of Crane, Hodl & Rekt LLP (formerly Crane, Hodl, Rekt & Moon; Mr. Moon left the firm in November 2021)
Jury: twelve completed Octobers, 2014 through 2025. Three have priors.
In the crypto market, seasonal narratives are considered especially reliable. On Stocktwits, the analyst who investigates these claims is a member of an elite squad of one. These are his stories.
OPENING
We're On The Record 👨⚖
THE COURT: We're on the record. The defendant, Uptober, is charged on three counts. Count one, impersonating a reliable seasonal. Count two, accessory to three fourth-quarter losses. Count three, alt abandonment. Counsel, state your name.
MR. CRANE: Degen Crane. Forty-one thousand followers.
THE COURT: How does your client plead?
MR. CRANE: Not guilty, your honor. I've prepared a thread.
THE COURT: You've prepared a what?
MR. CRANE: Twelve parts. It's structured.
THE COURT: Is there a plea in it?
MR. CRANE: Part nine.
THE COURT: Counsel, are you long your client?
MR. CRANE: Your honor, I would never discuss my positions in open court.
[phone buzzes]
MR. CRANE: That's my exchange, your honor. They discuss them for me.
THE COURT: The People?
THE DATA: The People will show that a coin could post the defendant's record. There are twelve months on the calendar, and one of them was always going to get a hashtag.
THE COURT: Call your first witness.

THE PEOPLE'S EXHIBIT A
The Record 🏦
THE DATA: State your name.
THE RECORD: Twelve completed Octobers on the Total Crypto Market Cap, 2014 through 2025.
THE DATA: How many closed green?
THE RECORD: Nine. Median return a bit over 12%. Worst was 2014, down 13%. Best was 2021, which closed up +33%. Highest hit rate of any calendar month.
MR. CRANE: No further questions. Degen Crane. Forty-one thousand followers.
THE COURT: You already said that.
MR. CRANE: It's a brand, your honor. Brands repeat.
THE DATA: Cross. Isn't it true that a fair coin produces nine of twelve about seven percent of the time?
THE RECORD: It is.
THE DATA: And with twelve months on the calendar to choose from, the odds that at least one of them looks this good by accident?
THE RECORD: About four in five.
MR. CRANE: Objection. The People are asking the witness to do statistics without a poll, a Discord vote, or a single rocket emoji.
THE COURT: Overruled.
THE DATA: And the margin over February, April, and July on hit rate?
THE RECORD: One year.
THE DATA: The People call October 2025.
OCTOBER 2025: [sworn]
THE DATA: You closed red. -5.3%. Your fellow red Octobers, 2014 and 2018, were deep in bear markets. You were not. Did you order the long liquidation?
OCTOBER 2025: The Total Crypto Market Cap printed its all-time high on the 6th. $4.27 trillion. Four days later roughly $19 billion in mostly long positions got liquidated and the index fell 9% on the day. I wasn't a bear-market month. I was the top.
MR. CRANE: Move to strike. My client cannot be "the top." The top is a construct.
THE COURT: $4.27 trillion is not a construct, counselor.
MR. CRANE: Everything above $4 trillion is a construct, your honor. Ask anyone who bought there.
THE COURT: Let the record show the witness has confessed to being the cycle top, and that counsel appears to have bought there. Sit down, 2025.
THE PEOPLE'S EXHIBIT B
What Happened Next 🤔
THE DATA: The People call October 2021. You were green?
OCTOBER 2021: Closed up +33%. Best October on the chart.
THE DATA: And November?
OCTOBER 2021: Down 1.5%.
THE DATA: December?
OCTOBER 2021: Down negative 15.5%. The cycle topped November 10.
MR. CRANE: Move to strike. My client cannot be held responsible for what November did.
THE COURT: Your client introduced them.
MR. CRANE: Redirect, then. After the nine green Octobers, isn't it true November plus December finished positive six times, median gain around 38%?
OCTOBER 2021: It is.
THE DATA: And the other three? 2019, 2022, and this witness?
OCTOBER 2021: Each lost between 17 and 22%.
THE DATA: So one green October in three walked straight into a Q4 loss. The two yoots and you.
THE COURT: What's a yoot?
THE DATA: The two youths, your honor. 2019 and 2022.
MR. CRANE: Your honor, I'd like to enter into evidence a screenshot.
THE COURT: Of what?
MR. CRANE: My PnL. October 2021.
THE COURT: That's a JPEG, counselor.
MR. CRANE: It's a JPEG I minted, your honor. There's a difference.
THE COURT: Not to this court. The People?
THE DATA: The People call October 2014.
OCTOBER 2014: [sworn]
THE DATA: Three red Octobers. Three red fourth quarters. That's the statistic that's about to get quoted on every timeline. Isn't that right?
OCTOBER 2014: Technically. My November closed up +13%. Nov plus Dec finished at -3%. You can put me in a sentence with 2018's -39% and 2025's -20% if you want, but I'd like the record to show I barely lost.
THE COURT: Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining, 2014. Red is red.
OCTOBER 2014: Fair.
MR. CRANE: Your honor, 2014 barely counts. The whole market was five billion dollars. I paid that in gas fees in 2021.
THE COURT: You did not.
MR. CRANE: It felt like it.
THE COURT: The court notes the damage in that statistic is two years, not three, and that the bailiff will remove anyone who tweets it as three without the footnote.

THE PEOPLE'S EXHIBIT C
The Rotation 🔄
THE DATA: The People call Bitcoin Dominance. State your occupation.
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: I measure how much of the room is Bitcoin.
THE DATA: In how many of the twelve Octobers did you rise?
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: Ten.
THE DATA: And in how many Novembers did you fall?
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: Ten.
GALLERY: WEN ALT SEASON?! WEN ALT SEASON?! WEN ALT SEASON?!
THE COURT: Order! Whoever shouted that will be removed.
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: November, historically. Ten of twelve.
THE COURT: The witness will not answer the gallery.
THE DATA: Tell the court about 2017.
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: Bitcoin took nearly ten points of share in October and gave four back in November while alts went vertical. 2021 and 2024 ran the same play smaller. Up two to three in October, down two to three in November.
MR. CRANE: Objection. My client represents the entire market.
THE COURT: Your client is roughly 60% one ticker, counselor.
MR. CRANE: That's a diversified portfolio where I come from.
THE COURT: Where is that?
MR. CRANE: A Telegram group, your honor.
THE DATA: So when the defendant shows up green, it's Bitcoin outperforming, and the alt catch-up is November's business.
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: Ten of twelve years, yes. Anyone holding alts waiting for October to bail them out is a month early.
MR. CRANE: Objection. The witness is describing my personal situation.
THE COURT: That's not an objection.
MR. CRANE: Permission to treat the witness as hostile.
THE COURT: On what basis?
MR. CRANE: It goes up every time my alts go down.
THE COURT: Denied.
THE DATA: One more thing. Your readings for 2014 through 2016 say 97 to 99%.
BITCOIN DOMINANCE: TradingView's index barely counted alts back then. Those early Octobers are Bitcoin Octobers whatever the ticker says.
THE COURT: The court accepts TradingView's monthly bars as an authority, with that asterisk, in the tradition of accepting the United States Post Office as an authority on Santa Claus.
THE PEOPLE'S EXHIBIT D
Inside The Month 📆
THE DATA: The People call the Daily Bars. How far back do you go?
THE DAILY BARS: 2016. Ten Octobers.
THE DATA: Where did the low print?
THE DAILY BARS: First half of the month, nine of ten. The high printed in the second half eight of ten, and the two exceptions were the two red years. 2018 topped on October 1. 2025 topped on the 6th. Median drawdown from the open before the month found its footing was 7%. Three years went past 10.
MR. CRANE: So my client's slow starts should be bought.
THE DAILY BARS: The first week has nothing to offer this court. Four of ten were red through day seven and three of those closed green. Six were green through day seven and one of them, 2025, was up 6% after a week and finished down. 2021 was up 17 after a week.
[phone buzzes]
THE COURT: Counsel, is that a liquidation notice?
MR. CRANE: It's a margin call, your honor. Completely different thing.
THE COURT: How?
MR. CRANE: One of them I still have time to fix.
THE DATA: Let's talk about 2017 and 2021. Up 20 and 28% through the 15th. Then 5 and 4 the rest of the way. Are we to believe October cooks in two weeks when it takes the rest of the dataset a full month? Did 2021 have magic grits?
MR. CRANE: Objection. Relevance.
THE COURT: It's My Cousin Vinny, counselor. It's always relevant.
THE DAILY BARS: Those two came into October off a hot Q3. The "wait for the mid-month dip" template is 2023, which sat flat for two weeks and then ran 21% when the ETF headlines hit.
THE DATA: The People would like to name some accomplices. CME announced Bitcoin futures October 31, 2017. PayPal switched on crypto October 21, 2020. BITO listed October 19, 2021. IBIT showed up on the DTCC list October 23, 2023. Would you say the defendant had help?
THE DAILY BARS: Nearly every big second half had a catalyst that landed in late October.
MR. CRANE: Your honor, I move for a bad court thingy.
THE COURT: Denied.
MR. CRANE: Then I move for a recess. My exchange is doing scheduled maintenance and I can't feel my hands.
THE COURT: Denied. Continue.
THE PEOPLE'S EXHIBIT E
The Clock 🕰
THE DATA: The People introduce the cycle clock.
MR. CRANE: Objection. Astrology.
THE COURT: Show me a horoscope and it's sustained. Show me a calculator and it's overruled.
THE DATA: It's subtraction, your honor. The Total Crypto Market Cap's three cycle lows. January 2015. December 2018. November 2022. Forty-seven months, then forty-seven months. The next date on that count is October 2026.
THE COURT: Overruled.
THE DATA: The highs run the same way. January 2018, November 2021, October 2025, at 46 and 47 months. Both series put this October on the calendar as a low window.
MR. CRANE: You're out of order! This whole court is out of order!
THE COURT: Counsel, you're doing the Pacino.
MR. CRANE: It's the only one I have.
THE DATA: By halving count, 2026 is the second year after the April 2024 halving. The other second years in the record are 2014, 2018, and 2022. Their Octobers: -13%, -7%, +7%. Their Nov plus Dec: -3%, -39%, -22%. Two of the three red Octobers live in that bucket. The rules of halving cycles are simple and finite. Any Cosmo girl would have known.
MR. CRANE: Redirect. 2017 and 2021 came into October off hot third quarters and ran +27% and +33%.
THE DATA: Post-halving peak years. Opposite bucket. And counsel forgot 2020, which also came in hot and closed up +19%.
MR. CRANE: Nobody remembers 2020. That's the point of 2020.
THE DATA: Counsel's client had a Q3 this year that closed up +41%. The only Q3 in the dataset where July, August, and September all closed green. The best September the Total Crypto Market Cap has printed. Twenty of those 41 points came in three sessions, August 19 through 21. There is no analog. Counsel is borrowing two and hoping nobody checks the third.
MR. CRANE: Then I'd like to enter a counter-analog.
THE COURT: Which year?
MR. CRANE: Next year. T
THE COURT: That's not evidence, counselor.
THE DATA: One more item. The June low, $1.99 trillion, was 53% off the top. The prior three cycles bottomed at -76%, -88%, and -76%. Either the ETF era shortened the bear, which is possible and which people also said in 2022, or the low isn't in.
THE VERDICT
Closing Arguments 🦜
MR. CRANE: Members of the jury. Nine of twelve. I could sit down right now.
THE COURT: Please do.
MR. CRANE: I will not. My client walks in green three years in four. The People brought a coin flip and a Japanese midpoint. I brought vibes, your honor, and vibes are up nine of twelve.
THE COURT: Vibes are not in evidence.
MR. CRANE: They're in my bio. And if my client is guilty, so is everyone in this room who bought the October 1 open with their rent, and I don't see any of them at the defense table.
THE COURT: Several of them are on the jury.
MR. CRANE: Then I like my odds. The defense rests. Degen Crane. Thirty-eight thousand followers.
THE COURT: You had forty-one this morning.
MR. CRANE: I posted the thread during the recess, your honor.
THE COURT: I denied the recess.
MR. CRANE: The thread didn't do well either.
THE DATA: The People will be brief. The defendant is nine for twelve. So is a mediocre free-throw shooter, and nobody goes 20x long the next one.
THE COURT: The jury?
FOREMAN (OCTOBER 2016): Deadlocked, your honor. Nine to three.
MR. CRANE: I'd like the three holdouts removed.
THE COURT: They're the three red Octobers, counselor.
MR. CRANE: Exactly. Bias.
THE COURT: The court notes that is the same split as the evidence, and withholds judgment pending a monthly close. Jury instructions follow. The court will speak plainly, because the jury has money on this. So, apparently, does counsel.
FROM THE BENCH
Bench Instructions 🪑
$2.53 trillion is the September low. It held through October in eight of twelve years. The four breaks were 2014, 2019, 2022, and 2025, and two of those four still closed the month green. A break alone is not a conviction. A break plus a red month is 2014 and 2025.
$2.98 trillion is the monthly Kijun. A monthly close above it is the difference between a bear-market rally and a trend change. No other number on the chart carries that much information.
$3.13 trillion is the 50% retrace, with the December and January highs stacked directly above. Through there and the 2021 analog is admissible again.
The docket: October 6 is the one-year anniversary of the top. CPI mid-month. FOMC on the 27th and 28th. Monthly expiry on the 30th. Midterms the following Tuesday.
Whatever the defendant does, Bitcoin does it first. We're adjourned.
