The MVRV 📈

In today’s newsletter, we’re going to look at the past nine years of combined MVRV data for $BTC ( ▼ 1.8% ), $XRP ( ▼ 4.09% ), $ETH ( ▼ 0.45% ), and $ADA ( ▼ 2.74% ). So from mid-December 2018 to today. The purpose is to identify any patterns or behaviors that could give some insights into how the market is currently leaning: bearish, bullish, or neutral.

MVRV stands for Market Value to Realized Value. Market value is what a coin trades for today. Realized value is what the coins changed hands for - the price stamped on each one the last time it moved on-chain. Divide the first by the second and you get how much profit or loss the market is sitting on. Above one, in the green. Below one, underwater.

The classic version counts every coin in existence, including the ones that haven't moved since 2013 and never will. Useless for timing. The combined version used here only counts coins that moved in the last 60, 90, or 180 days, then averages the three. That makes it a read on recent buyers - the people who can still be shaken out or squeezed - instead of a museum of old cost bases.

Let’s get into it. 👇

Forecast your bank balance, not your P&L

Profit and cash are not the same thing, and Q4 is where brands find that out. DTC payouts land days late. Amazon holds reserves. Wholesale pays on terms. Inventory deposits go out long before a single unit ships.

The 13-Week Cash Flow Template is a free Excel download built on the direct method, so it forecasts the bank balance week by week instead of the accrual P&L. The timing engine handles DTC and Amazon payout delays, wholesale terms, inventory, and capex, and converts your monthly budget into a weekly view. The liquidity summary shows your lowest cash point, when it hits, how many weeks you sit below your minimum, and implied runway on average weekly burn.

It runs October 9 through January 1, so Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and year-end are already in the window.

Bitcoin’s Combined MVRV - Bitcoin's Lower Low Didn't Come With a Lower Low. Now What. 🤔

Same Shape, Three Bottoms

  • 2018: price roughly cut in half from February to December. The indicator made a higher low.

  • 2022: lower price low from June to November. Higher indicator low.

  • 2026: lower price low from February to June. Higher indicator low. All three second lows landed in the same neighborhood - low 0.70s to mid 0.80s.

  • That's price getting cheaper while the average recent buyer gets less underwater.

What August Did

  • Mid-August the reading crossed back above one for the third time this year. The first two, January and April, failed inside a month. January cost 30%.

  • A week later it hit the mid-1.1s, the first touch of that area since spring 2025. Historically a fresh arrival up there, after months away, has kept going four times out of five over the following quarter. Lingering there is a different story, but it hasn't lingered yet.

  • That spike was a higher indicator high on a lower price high than April. Underwater cost basis clearing out. Nobody's excited at 79k.

What September Looks Like

  • Three weeks of the indicator falling with price mostly flat. That's the average cost basis rising underneath a market that isn't moving. Mildly constructive, not exciting.

  • The reading is neutral territory now. Historically this zone has been a coin flip over the next quarter - the muddiest bucket in nine years of data.

  • Hold above 1.15 and this joins the group that ran. Drop below one again and it's the fourth failed reclaim of the year, which starts looking like 2022. Until one of those happens, it's just a cool shape.

XRP’s Combined MVRV - Underwater for Fifty Weeks. That's a Record. 😱

What XRP's Combined MVRV Shows

  • It sells its rallies. Three out of four times the reading has crossed above 1.20, XRP was lower three months later. The exceptions were all mid-bull, and one of them was November 2024, which went up 258%. Being right on the median and short into that is how accounts die.

  • It buys its washouts, but only the deep ones. Below 0.70, which has happened maybe 20 weeks in nine years, the next quarter has paid three times out of four. Below 0.80 is mush. Barely better than a coin flip.

  • Bitcoin's "first week vs. fourth week" distinction doesn't show up here. XRP is a simpler animal. High gets sold, deep low gets bought.

2026 So Far

  • Three lows. Early February near 1.37, late June near 1.05, early August at a buck. Price kept making lower lows. The indicator didn't improve on any of them - it flatlined in the high 0.60s to low 0.70s all three times.

  • That's cost basis falling exactly in step with price. Holders replacing, nobody getting less underwater.

  • Four fresh drops below 0.80 this year. December, January, March, May. One paid. Low did not mean the selling was finished.

  • The August pop to 1.42 took the reading to 0.97. Still didn't cross one. Three weeks later price is 1.36 and it's back below 0.90.

50 Weeks Underwater???

  • A weekly close above one ends the streak.

  • The zone that has paid is below 0.70. It isn't there. It's in the middle, which this cycle has been the worst place to be - a third positive, median loss near 20%.

Ethereum’s Combined MVRV - Ether Failed Twice at Breakeven This Year. The Third Try Is Four Weeks Old. 🔢

ETH Likes The Breakouts

  • It rewards the breakout. The first cross above 1.20 after a quarter away has been followed by a higher price three months later eight times out of ten.

  • The edge has shrunk. The cases before 2023 ran a median north of 50%. The four since ran high teens. Still three of four positive.

  • The top is higher than you'd think. It's the mid-1.5s, not 1.2 or 1.3. Last August's spike above 1.5 at the 4,700 high was one of six in nine years. Four of the six were lower a quarter later, and that one lost nearly 60% over six months. The catch: those readings were usually still rising a month later.

  • Reclaiming one means nothing on its own. Coin flip over the next quarter. What matters is whether it holds.

2026 So Far

  • February low near 1,940 with the indicator deep in the washout zone, June low near 1,610 with the indicator well above where it was in February. Price lower, hodlers less underwater.

  • Three trips back above one. January failed and cost 40% inside a month. April failed and bled for a quarter. July held. Four weeks sitting just above breakeven, then the August jump.

  • August 13 was the first cross above 1.20 in over a year. The eleventh in the file. Four weeks in, price is up about 8%, roughly on pace with the recent-era cases.

What Bulls Need

  • The current band, low-1.1s to 1.3, has been ETH’s best place to be historically, about 60% positive over the next quarter. It's there now.

  • The failure mode is late 2024: cross 1.20, roll straight back under one. Losing breakeven before year-end would make this the fourth failed reclaim in twelve months. Holding above 1.10 through October keeps it in the bull zone.

Cardano’s Combined MVRV - ADA Just Ended a Record 42 Weeks Underwater 🤿

42-Week Underwater Trend Done, But Cheaper Hasn’t Meant Much

  • Pick any week in nine years and ADA was lower a quarter later more often than not. The typical outcome is a low double-digit loss.

  • Cheap doesn't help. Every band below breakeven has a negative median over the next quarter, under every way of counting it. Lingering in the washout zone has been the worst of all - fewer than one week in four was higher three months on. Bitcoin and Ether reward buying the deep washout. Cardano punishes it.

  • Recovery is what has paid. Reclaiming breakeven within two months of a washout reading: eight prior cases, five ran, median gain near 50%. The three that didn't - spring 2018, March 2022, February 2025 - lost 30% to 60%. And the edge fades by six months. It's a one-quarter trade with a bad tail.

2026 So Far

  • Peak to trough this year, down about 64%. From the 2025 high, down 86%.

  • February low near a quarter, June low near 15 cents, indicator higher on the second one. Same shape Bitcoin and Ether printed. On Cardano that shape has never been a signal.

  • July 30 was the first close above breakeven all year, within two months of a washout print. That's the recovery setup.

What Bulls Need

  • Hold above breakeven through October and this stays in bull moves territory. Lose it and it's the 2022 script - reclaim, fail, another 40 weeks underwater.

Crypto Stuff That Happened Today, But A Long Time Ago

Here’s what was happening in the newsletter a year ago today:

  • Altcoins were damn close to breaking out.

  • Alts were quietly outperforming the big stuff.

  • Worldcoin got a full treasury-fueled pamp - Eightco raised about $270M to buy WLD, installed Dan Ives as chair, and saw its stock spike as much as 5,600% intraday before closing up 3,009%.

Here’s what was happening in the newsletter two years ago today:

  • Bitcoin ETF institutional ownership kept climbing - more than 1,000 institutional shareholders had entered over two reporting periods, with BlackRock’s IBIT leading and major financial players holding 20% of shares.

  • ETH positioning looked less bearish - over 40,000 ETH, worth about $92M, was pulled from derivatives exchanges, while a whale bought 5,000 ETH worth roughly $11.46M on the dip.

  • Crypto scams were still a national sport - scams rose 45% in 2023 and drained $5.6B, with older victims hit hardest. Humanity, somehow, remains online.
